The historic Kessler Theater opened in the spring of 1942. Owned and operated by Gene Autry from the late 1940s to the early 1950s and nearly destroyed by a 1957 tornado, the Kessler has undergone many renovations throughout the years. Currently operated as a mix-use facility, the theater books live music shows throughout the year as well as operates as a special events venue.
Oddfellows is a favorite hot spot for those visiting the Bishop Arts District. The farmhouse-chic cafe, founded by Oak Cliff community leaders, lures people in with its fantastic coffee program and then backs it all up with its excellent variety of traditional American dishes with ingredients that are primarily locally sourced. Oddfellows is so passionate about their coffee program that they went out and purchased a rare, La Marzocco Strada, expresso machine which is only the fourth in existence in the country.
The 7th Street Murals is an ongoing program that is continually evolving and growing with the Oak Cliff community. The program involves professional muralists mentoring students and teaching young artists while at the same time adding artwork that lends to neighborhood beautification and countering graffiti. These large artwork installments have created a wonderful outdoor gallery that will constantly grab visitors attention.
Eno's, run by Chef-Owner Matt Spillers, is located in the Bishop Arts District and has come to be known for its legendary thin-crust pizza and its varied selection of microbrews and craft beers. Eno's makes it a point to buy ingredients and produce from local farmers. As for their beverage program, they look for brews and wines made by American craftsmen.
The Texas Theatre, a historical landmark, is praised for its vintage atmosphere, art deco, indie films, local concerts and a full bar that lets patrons play LP records. The theatre has a significant place in the history of Dallas. It was opened in 1931 by billionaire Howard Hughes, and then in 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald was captured there. It has changed ownership many times in the years it has been open, but in 2001, the Oak Cliff Foundation restored and renovated the building.
